Your Part and His Part

  • Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.
  • John 14:12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do every greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
  • John 15:10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
  • Deuteronomy 28:1-2 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.

God has so much for us but He wants our surrender, submission and obedience to His Word before we access His promises. We are to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness before we receive His abundance (Matthew 6:33). We are to confess Jesus as Lord before we can be saved (Romans 10:9-10). We need to believe in Him with all our heart before we can do the work that He did and do even greater works (John 14:12). We need to pray and believe before we can receive (Mark 11:24). We need to delight in Him before we can get the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4). We need to love Jesus more than father, mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters and even our own lives if we want to be His disciples (Luke 14:26). Speaking to believers, Jesus told them that: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31). We will be known as His disciples if we have love for one another (John 13:35). We cannot bear fruit unless we abide in Him (John 15:4). We do not have because we do not ask or ask with wrong motives (James 4:2-3). We can have countless blessings overtake us if we obey His commands and diligently listen to His voice (Deuteronomy 28:1-2). We can move mountains if we have faith like a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20).

God’s Word is truth. It is also clear. Before He does for us what He wants to do, He asks us to act on His Word. As we do our part, He will do His.

How to do your part:
  1. Surrender all to God. Submit to Him and yield to Him. The perfect example was Jesus. Look at His surrender and look at His results. Jesus what He did as a man as He had let go of His deity to redeem us.
  2. Spend time in the Word daily. When you see a promise or a result you’d like to have, look at whether there is a condition to receiving what God said. Obey that condition. Discipline yourself to meet it, or seek His guidance on it and His Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. For example, God wants to give us the desires of our hearts but, before He does, we are to delight in Him. 15 minutes a day or making Him our fifth priority, or loving others more than Him just won’t cut it. Delight is delight and that requires us to lavishly love on Him and to sacrificially spend time (forsaking others and other things – movie, coffee, sports show, etc.) with Him as our priority.
  3.  Spend time in prayer, praise and worship as well as praying in the Spirit.  Listen to God as some things are only spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).
  4. Obey His Word and obey His leading when He speaks to you.
  5. Stand for the promises of God (Ephesians 6:13). Understand that the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy and some of his tactics are deception, doubt, and unbelief. If he can get you to doubt God’s goodness or God’s promises, you’ll never receive what rightfully belongs to you as God’s child.

Call to action:
If you want God to meet the desires of your heart, choose to live your life daily by delighting in Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what delighting in Him looks like for your life.
