Two Commandments Jesus Gave Us

  • Matthew 22:36-39 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.   And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
  • 1 John 4:19-21 We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

You are to love God with all that you are. It appears impossible but it is done one decision at a time, one thought at a time and choosing to conform to His Word in all you do. For example, if your thoughts don’t line up with His Word, don’t let them dwell there. Renew them. Take them captive. As for your will and emotions, line them up with what God says in His Word. The other commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. God is love (1 John 4:8) and you are asked to imitate Him (Ephesians 5:1). He even asks you to love your enemy so that you would be sons of your Father (Matthew 5:45). Regardless of the circumstance, do as your Savior did and choose love. Know that God wouldn’t ask you to do something you couldn’t do. He has shed His love in your heart (Romans 5:5) and with that kind of love, you are able to love your neighbor.

How to choose the way of love:
  1. Surrender and submit to God and ask Him to change you into the image of His Son so that you can love Him as well as love your neighbor as yourself.
  2. A wonderful way to start this journey of love is to praise and worship Him daily. Additionally, read the Word and let it change you by doing what it says.
  3. To love God the way He should be loved, you must put Him first in your life. The decisions you make must honor His Word and His Spirit’s leading. Every thought, word spoken and action need to respect His commandments.
  4. Love your neighbor as yourself by exercising the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Let them be evident in all you say and do. Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
