The Holy Spirit Speaks Through Individuals

  • 2 Chronicles 24:20 Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the LORD’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.’”
  • Mark 13:11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
  • Acts 1:16 “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus.”
  • Acts 11:28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world.

In the Old Testament, few people were empowered with the Holy Spirit so He spoke mostly through prophecies spoken by prophets. 2 Peter 1:21 states: “For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” Today, every born-again believer can hear for himself directly from the Lord through the Holy Spirit (John 14:26, 1 John 2:27). Believers can be empowered with God’s Spirit through the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Acts 2:17-18 states: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.” You too can and should prophesy and God’s Spirit will speak through you as you yield to Him.

How to allow the Spirit to speak through you:
  1. The more you surrender to God and live your life for Him, the more He’ll be able to use you. God needs yielded and submitted vessels (sons and daughters) who will be sensitive and obedient to the leading of His Spirit. As you prove faithful in the small things, He’ll be able to give you greater responsibilities.
  2. Talk to God and share with Him that you are available to be used in any capacity He needs you. Yield yourself to His Spirit as He guides you from day to day. He may begin by getting you to ask someone if everything is alright or to volunteer to help them. Just be obedient to His gentle whisper.
  3. Pray in the Spirit throughout your day. Additionally, dedicate time to pray in the Spirit for 30 minutes to an hour daily to develop your own spirit. It will be easier for you to hear the leading of the Holy Spirit.
  4. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit daily and you’ll develop your spirit and your spiritual ears. You’ll be able to hear Him as He leads you to share something with an individual. Sometimes the Holy Spirit reveals a word of knowledge about someone. Ask Him if it’s meant for you to pray about it or share with the individual.

Call to action:
Develop your relationship with the Holy Spirit and determine to listen to His leading. If He gives you a prophesy for someone, ask Him if you are at liberty to share it with the individual at this time.
