The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

  • 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4, 7-11 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed…  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them…  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
  • 1 Corinthians 14:12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.

Hebrews 2:4 states: “God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.”  There are several gifts of the Holy Spirit as outlined in 1 Corinthians 12 and He distributes them according to His will.  Jesus had many, if not all, in operation in His ministry as He was totally submitted and yielded to His Father.  Many disciples had several gifts which they had been given as recorded in the Book of Acts.

How to position yourself to receive spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit:
  1. Read the Gospels to see the gifts in operation in Jesus’ life.  Read also the Book of Acts to see how the gifts were manifested in the disciples of the early church.  See yourself being used by God in the administration of those gifts.
  2. The more you surrender to God and live your life for Him, the more He’ll be able to use you.  As you yield and submit to God, His Spirit will give you gifts to use to bless others so they can know that Jesus is still alive and well.  Be sensitive and obedient to His leading when using His gift(s).
  3. Dedicate time to pray in the Spirit daily to position yourself to be yielded to the Spirit of God.
  4. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit daily and it will give you an opportunity to hear from Him.  Purpose yourself to listen to what He has to say.
