The Breastplate of Righteousness

  • Ephesians 6:10-11, 14 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes… Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place…
  • Romans 3:22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…
  • Hebrews 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

You have been made the righteousness of God if you’ve confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior from your mouth in faith (2 Corinthians 5:21). Once the idea of your righteousness is settled in your heart, the enemy should not be able to use your past against you, tell you that you are not good enough, or convince you that you are still a sinner as you’ve been redeemed. It’s not that you don’t miss it and sin at times, it’s that you’re no longer called a sinner because you’ve accepted the gift that Jesus paid for you on the cross. When you live a righteous life according to the Word, your breastplate is well able to protect the most important part of your body, your heart.

Christ’s righteousness has assured your right-standing with God and that gives you access to His throne room. Continue to live in purity, understanding, patience and kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love, and in truthful speech (2 Corinthians 6:6-7). Negative emotions such as anger do not produce the righteousness that God desires (James 1:20) so avoid them.

How to use the breastplate of righteousness to protect yourself:
  1. Let your righteousness which comes as a result of your faith in Christ be settled in your heart by reading scriptures that refer to it. Realize that what Christ did gave you right-standing with God and you now have access to the throne of grace.
  2. Spend time reading the Word daily and with God. This will enable you to be guided to keep your breastplate securely in place.
  3. Pursue righteousness as indicated in the Word (2 Timothy 2:22). This means that you don’t live righteously by accident but on purpose. Whatever is right and according to the Word, put it in practice in your life. Flee evil desires.
