Seek First the Kingdom of God

  • Matthew 6:33  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
  • Matthew 13:44-46  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

The Word says to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.  Our first priority as believers should be to live to make a difference for the kingdom in this world by sharing the gospel and making disciples.  When we share God’s love through words and actions, we reflect Him to others.  It demonstrates His righteousness in us.  As we take care of God’s kingdom through obedience and actions, He’ll take care of us.

How to put the kingdom first:
  1. Make God the priority in your schedule every day – non-negotiable priority.  Worship Him, have reverence for Him, believe His Word.
  2. Spend time in the Word, in prayer, and praying in the Spirit daily. Allow God to speak to you, as His Word teaches and instructs you as well as corrects and rebukes you.
  3. Spend time praying in the Spirit daily.  Additionally, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading throughout your day and obey it.
  4. Before making an important decision, inquire of God.  He knows the plans He has for your life.  Do you have peace about it?
  5. Obey God’s Word – love people, serve them.  Live a godly life.
  6. Deny yourself rather than disobey the Word.

Call to action:
Think of ways where you can put God first in your life (e.g. spend time with Him first thing in the morning and ask Him to guide you throughout your day).  Put in place some of the things you thought of.  Believe His Word when He says that when you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, He’ll take care of the rest.
