Persevering Through Trials

  • James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
  • James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
  • 2 Peter 1:5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 2 Peter 2:9 …the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials…

Jesus said: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). The Word warns you that you will have trouble and trials in this life so it should not come as a surprise when they come. What you do to prepare yourself for those situations will make the difference between being pulled down and crushed or standing in the midst of trouble and coming out a winner. You have been given everything you need in Christ to handle trials and trouble. You have the Word, you have your Covenant Partner in God, you have your authority, you have the victory that has been secured by Jesus over the enemy, and you have God’s own Spirit within you to help you, counsel you, and to reveal to you things to come. Choose to grow your faith by moving your mountain and persevere using every weapon God gave you. Since Jesus has overcome the world, the victory is yours to enforce.

How to persevere through trials:
  1. Arm yourself before trials come by understanding the spiritual weapons available to you. (See the category Spiritual Armor and Weapons.)
  2. Spend time in the Word, in prayer and in praise daily.
  3. Meditate on Psalm 91 to know the protection the Father provides to all who abide in Him.
  4. Ask God what to do in a given situation. His Spirit, the Spirit of truth, lives in you and has all the answers. Let Him be your Helper and Counselor. He’ll respond as you inquire of Him and listen so be attentive to His direction and leading.
  5. Use your spiritual weapons to obtain the victory.

Call to action:
When a trial comes your way, see yourself as an overcomer, as more than a conqueror. See the situation as one seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6). Know the spiritual weapons that are yours to obtain your victory and use them.
