Obedience to His Word

  • Matthew 28:19-20  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
  • John 14:15  If you love me, keep my commands…
  • 2 John 1:6  And this is love:  that we walk in obedience to his commands.  As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
  • Deuteronomy 28:1-2  If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.  All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.

Jesus says that if we love Him, we will obey what He commands.  Obedience is linked to loving Jesus.  When you read a command in His Word, don’t debate it, obey it.  This simple act of obedience will tell your Father and Jesus just how much you love them. Let the blessings come upon you because of your obedience to God (Deuteronomy 28:1-2).

How to obey His Word:
  1. You must first know His commands to be able to obey them so spend some time daily reading your bible.  It is more important that you read a little and meditate on it rather than read chapter after chapter and not remember or understand what you’re reading.  Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the Word to you.
  2. When you see a command in the Word, act upon it (Proverbs 4:20-22).  Ask God for help if you need it.  For example, if it says love your neighbor, then love your neighbors – not just the ones living next door but everyone you meet.  Love is an action verb so just do it.  Don’t analyze it, ponder it, debate it or you’ll convince yourself out of it.  Be a doer of the Word (James 1:22).
  3. If your pastor, minister, priest, etc. or an evangelist on television says to do something, confirm it in the Word and do it.

Call to action:
The Word tells us to forgive.  Is there anyone you need to forgive?  If so, take a step right now to forgive that individual.
