Love One Another as Jesus Loved You

  • John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

It is Jesus’ love for us that made Him go through what He did before and at His crucifixion. When the soldiers came to arrest Jesus (Matthew 26:53-54), He told His disciple to put away his sword and then said: “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled…”. Our beautiful Savior knew what awaited Him and still chose the cross because of His love for us.

He gave us a command to love one another as He loved us. He said that by this “love” everyone would know that we are His disciples. He expects us to love each other greatly and choose the way of love when there’s a conflict. Instead of gossip, choose the way of love. Instead of dishonor, choose love. You have the choice in every conversation, every action, every thought and every decision to honor God by choosing to walk in love. Love never fails.

How to live a life of love:
  1. Live a life of love one decision at a time. It’s a choice to walk in love and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
  2. Be patient with people and give them grace. Pray for them and ask God to help you in dealing with others.
  3. Don’t envy others. Remember who your Father is and claim His promises for yourself.
  4. Don’t do things for others out of selfish ambition. Do it out of love for God and to honor His name.
  5. Forgive and forget; don’t keep a record of wrongs. Look ahead and not behind. Bitterness and unforgiveness will keep you trapped in a prison of your own making.
  6. Speak God’s truth, in love only. If not, exercise the ministry of silence.
  7. Love protects people so don’t say anything negative about anyone. You will be held accountable for every idle or empty word you speak (Matthew 12:36).
  8. Show God’s love by doing good deeds for others.

Call to action:
Choose to love your neighbors and to walk in love today. Think of ways you can choose love in your daily life rather than let yourself get caught up in negative emotions, conversations, actions, or even thoughts.
