Love God With All Your Soul

  • Mark 12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
  • Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
  • Galatians 5:16-21 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Your soul consists of your will and emotions as well as your mind (the mind is covered under Love God with All Your Mind). The way to love the Lord your God with them is to make them submit to His Word. Don’t let your will dictate your decisions if it’s contrary to God’s Word or the leading of His Spirit. Don’t let your emotions dictate your decisions and/or reactions but let the Word of God direct them. If His Word says to walk in love, let your will and emotions line up with that command. If His Word says to forgive, let your will and emotions be submitted to that command. If you want to be part of the worship team but God is leading you to be on a different team, the better place for you is in His will. Don’t be led by your flesh – be led by the Spirit of God and by His Word. Let the fruit of the Spirit be in evidence in your life.

How to love God with all your soul:
  1. Spend time with God thanking, praising and worshiping Him daily. As you do, your spirit will rule your will and emotions. The more time you spend on your knees in true worship and ask God to transform you into the image of His Son, the more you’ll be led by His Spirit.
  2. Don’t let your soul dictate your life. Let every decision and reaction be based on God’s Word and the leading of His Spirit and not on your will and emotions.
  3. Meditate on verses where you may be challenged in life, e.g. if you have trouble walking in love with others, meditate on love verses and let them minister to you. The Holy Spirit will convict you and will show you how to change.
  4. Serve where and in the capacity He wants you to serve. Don’t let feelings for the work or people on that team decide for you. Obey His direction. Serve willingly and cheerfully wherever He directs you.

Call to action:
Examine yourself this week when it comes to your will and emotions. Are they dictating your decisions and your reactions? If so, determine to change. Ask God to help you and He’ll oblige. Listen to His leading. It may be challenging at first if your emotions have been leading you until now. Persist and you’ll be glad you did.
