Living a Life Led By the Spirit

  • Romans 8:5-7 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
  • Galatians 5:16-17 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
  • Romans 6:6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.

In John 16:7, Jesus said: “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” Through the Holy Spirit, each born-again believer has access to the very wisdom and power of God. We can ask the Holy Spirit for direction, instructions, answers, strategies, etc. at anyplace, anytime.

It is important that we live by the Spirit on a daily basis because those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God (Romans 8:8) but those who are led by the Spirit of God are referred to as the children of God (Romans 8:14). The Word says that what the flesh (emotions, will, body) desires is contrary to the Spirit. Therefore, you need to be mindful of that in your everyday life. Are you led by the Spirit or your flesh in what you do, what you look at, what you listen to, who you talk to, etc.?

How to live a life led by the Spirit:
  1. Choose to surrender all that you are and all that you have to God.
  2. Understand who the Holy Spirit is and what He does. Know that the Holy Spirit is there to counsel you, teach you, convict you, guide you into all truth and tell you what is yet to come.
  3. Be conscious that God’s Holy Spirit lives inside you. Would you watch all the TV shows you are watching with Jesus sitting next to you? Then think of the fact that His Spirit lives inside you the next time you watch a TV show you shouldn’t. Listen for that still small voice inside you and hear what it’s telling you.
  4. When you make plans or a decision, determine to be led by the Spirit instead of your flesh. Don’t decide about a new job based on the salary or your circumstances. Listen to the Holy Spirit’s directions. Live a life surrendered to God.
  5. Your actions should always reflect God’s Word. If you want to speak your mind but the Word says to walk in love, do as the Word teaches you. If someone drops papers on the ground and the Spirit prompts you to walk in love, help the person pick up those papers. You are called to be a blessing.
  6. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you revelation as you read the Word of God or as you meditate on the Word.
  7. Ask the Holy Spirit for answers to everyday situations or difficulties because you know Him to be the Spirit of truth who will guide you into all truth (John 16:13).

Call to action:
Listen to that still small voice inside you. For example, if you’re being invited to an outing with friends and you have a witness in your spirit not to go, don’t be afraid of what “men” will think but listen to that still small voice inside you and don’t go. If you’re offered a job and you get a check in your spirit, spend time on your knees to confirm His leading. Choose to be led by the Spirit.
