Little Faith or No Faith

  • Matthew 8:23-26  Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.  Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.  But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us!  We’re going to drown!”  He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?  Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
  • Matthew 16:8  Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
  • Matthew 17:17-21 ..Bring the boy here to me.  Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.  Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”  He replied, “Because you have so little faith.  Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Jesus called it as it was.  When his disciples lacked faith, he told them so.  He even rebuked them.  We must assess our faith, as Jesus pointed to a lack of faith when the disciples didn’t get the desired results or were afraid.  Fear is the opposite of faith.  Fear, unbelief or doubt can keep us from getting what we are praying and/or contending for.  We need to make sure the Word is settled in our hearts and that our trust is completely in God.

How to increase your faith:
  1. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes from hearing the message so read the Word of God daily.  You can also listen to the Word on audio.  Listen to biblical teachings.  Let the Word get rooted in your heart.
  2. The Holy Spirit is your Teacher and will teach you all things (John 14:26).  Invite Him to teach you as you read the Word.
  3. Take time to meditate on scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit, who lives inside you if you’ve made Jesus Lord and Savior of your life, to give you revelation.
  4. According to Jude 20, you can build yourself up in your most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit.  Therefore, pray in the Spirit daily.
  5. Surrender and submit to God.  When you obey God’s commands and abide in Him, you will have confidence to approach Him and expect to receive what you’ve requested.

Call to action:
Make it a goal to increase your faith by putting the Word in your heart and applying it.  Memorize key scriptures that you can use to build your faith such as 2 Corinthians 5:7: ‘We live by faith, not by sight’.  Then as circumstances come up, you can make a choice to live by faith and live victoriously.
