Greater Is He that Is in You

  • 1 John 4:4 …the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
  • Acts 5:15-16 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
  • Acts 19:11-12 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
  • Acts 8:6-8 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was great joy in that city.
  • Acts 6:8, 10 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people…. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

1 Corinthians 2:4-5: “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”

With the Greater One in him, Peter who had denied Jesus 3 times lead 3,000 to come to the knowledge of Christ in one day. With the Greater One in him, Paul who put followers of Christ in jail became one of Jesus Christ’s most powerful apostles. With the Greater One in him, Stephen performed great wonders and signs among the people. With the Greater One in him, Philip healed people and cast out demons which resulted in great joy in Samaria. With the Greater One in us, we should do as prescribed by Jesus and cast out demons and heal the sick (Luke 10:19, Mark 16:17-18).

When baptized with the Holy Spirit, the lives of Peter, Paul, Philip and Stephen changed. What is even more significant is that the lives of those they encountered did as well. It’s the Spirit’s power that makes miracles happen. There will be opposition from Satan you can be sure. Persecution will come your way as you become more like Jesus. But take heart, Jesus has overcome the world. Greater is He that is in you, the Holy Spirit, than he that is in the world, Satan (1 John 4:4).

How to allow the Holy Spirit to become the Greater One in you:
  1. Be filled with the Holy Spirit through the baptism of the Holy Spirit (see topic Holy Spirit Baptism). As a born-again believer the Holy Spirit comes to reside in you. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an additional empowerment. The early church disciples were asked to wait for this promise before leaving the city and the result of this empowerment was evident in their lives (Acts 1:5, 8, Acts 2:28).
  2. Read the Word daily and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it to you.
  3. Read scriptures pertaining to the Holy Spirit and meditate on them. Ask Him to give you revelation on His power and anointing.
  4. Pray in the Spirit as you are talking directly to God. Develop your spiritual ear to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
  5. Know that the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power because of the Holy Spirit. It’s nothing we can do on our own. It’s what we can accomplish by doing our part and trusting Him to do His.
  6. Act on the Word and, as you do, the Holy Spirit will be with you and enable you to make a difference for the kingdom of God. John 7:38-39 states: ‘Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this Jesus meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”

Call to action:
Pursue the baptism in the Holy Spirit if you’ve not already received it. If you have been baptized with the Holy Spirit, make a conscious decision to pray in the Spirit daily for 30 minutes to 1 hour and ask the Holy Spirit to give you revelation of Himself to you.
