Get Rid of Your Idols

  • Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.”
  • Exodus 34:14 Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
  • Matthew 10:37 Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
  • 1 John 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
  • Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Idols are people or things that people worship. Believers spend countless hours in front of devices, attached to them, and responding to them instantly. Do we give God the same attention we give our phone or computer? Do we even hear or recognize God’s voice? Do we respond when He needs us the way we respond for a friend or family member in need?

Where does God fit into your busy schedule? How much time do you actually spend with Him? Are there any idols you need to get rid of in your life? What has a hold on your heart? Do you respond more to the ringer of your text messages, emails or phone or to the voice of God? Do you love your mother, father, spouse, children or friends more than Him? Do you love money, status, material possessions or other more than Him?

If God is your only idol, don’t change a thing. You’re undoubtedly having much success and victory. Not only do you know it, but everybody else around you knows it too – just like they did with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God wants His children to have fun and to be blessed but He wants to be first in everything.

How to get rid of your idols:
  1. Assess if you have any idols in your life. What has your attention, what has your heart, what are your priorities?   Better yet, ask God if He believes you have any idols as He knows your heart. Ask Him to reveal those to you and ask Him to help you get rid of them.
  2. If God is not the Master of your heart or your time, get rid of the idols in your life. Remove all things that keep you from having a life devoted and surrendered to God. You should have an intimate relationship with your Father which allows you to trust Him in all circumstances.
  3. If a person has first place in your heart instead of God, determine to put God first. This includes your spouse, parents and children (Matthew 10:37).

Call to action:
Make God your number one priority. Choose to increase the time and attention you give Him each day. Look at how you can give Him first place in your life.
