Forgiven and Welcomed Back in the Family

  • Luke 15:20-24 “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”
  • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

When we read the full story of the prodigal son and how he lived and squandered all his money and lived, we can be shocked that he was welcomed back in the family without hesitation. Not only was he welcomed back, his rights and privileges as a son were restored to him. That’s how much God loves us. He restores us completely. Read this story again and see how the father runs to his son, throws his arms around him and kisses him. Have you backslidden or done something you thought was unforgiveable before or even after you became a child of God? If so, let His love minister to you right now and realize that when you ask forgiveness, you are truly forgiven. God forgives and forgets (Hebrews 8:12).

How to be welcomed back in the family:
  1. As with the prodigal son, you need only come to the Father with a repentant heart and He will greet you and restore you completely.
  2. Believe in that complete forgiveness and disregard any lies of the enemy to the contrary.
  3. If you waver in regards to God’s forgiveness, meditate on the story of the prodigal son and make it personal to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal that scripture to you to live a full life as a child of Almighty God.

Call to action:
Don’t let the enemy lie to you and keep you trapped in past sin. If you’ve never asked for forgiveness, ask God to forgive you right now and be restored with all your rights and privileges as a child of God. If you’ve already asked forgiveness with a repentant heart, know that He has forgiven you and disregard the enemy’s lies.
