Flee Evil Desires (Called Earthly Nature or Flesh)

  • 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace….
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:21 …reject every kind of evil.
  • Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
  • Ephesians 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

A man is a slave to whatever has mastered him (2 Peter 2:19). He is tempted by his own evil desire (James 1:14). As a Christian, be mastered by the Word and the Spirit but not by sin. Abstain from sinful desires which war against your soul (2 Peter 2:11). His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him (2 Peter 1:3-4). Therefore, as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do (1 Peter 1:14). Keep yourself from being polluted by the world (James 1:27).

There are sins using your mouth that you must flee such as: boasting, fighting, quarreling, coveting, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, anger, dissensions, lying, slander, foolish talk, coarse joking, filthy language, condemnation, criticism, gossip, complaining, grumbling, and judging. There are sins using the body that you must flee such as: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, lust, idolatry, orgies, obscenity, witchcraft, drunkenness, and brawling. The Word says there must not be even a “hint” of sexual immorality. There are other sins you must also flee such as: envy, selfish ambition, every form of malice, greed, and factions. Do not repay anyone evil for evil.

How to flee evil desires:
  1. Know who you are in Christ and what you’ve been given. You have everything you need for life and godliness through your knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 1:3-4).
  2. Spend time in prayer and in the Word daily so that you will avoid the pitfalls of evil desires as the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41). Let the Word teach you, train you, correct you and rebuke you (2 Timothy 3:17).
  3. Obey all His commands. Fleeing evil desires is done one decision at a time.
  4. Meditate scriptures related to your weaknesses. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you regarding these scriptures and give you revelation that will allow you to stand when evil desires come.
  5. Pray in the Spirit as this builds you up in your most holy faith (Jude 10). It will also develop your spirit and make it stronger to help you flee evil desires. The Holy Spirit will lead you to flee evil desires if you are listening.
  6. Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19). Develop discipline when it comes to your mouth. As you develop your spirit (in prayer, praise and worship, praying in the Spirit, time in the Word), you’ll find it easier to control your tongue. Galatians 5:16-17 states: “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other.”
  7. Romans 12:21 says to overcome evil with good. When there is gossip about someone, change the conversation. When there’s an argument, use wisdom and few words. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to counter evil with good. He has all the answers.
