Don’t Shrink Back and Don’t Be Double-Minded

  • Hebrews 10:38 But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.
  • James 1:6-8 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is a double-minded man and unstable in all they do.
  • Matthew 14:25-31 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Your trust in your Lord must be settled. The truth of the Word of God must be settled in your heart. You can’t be moved by circumstances and you must keep your eyes on Jesus. Peter was walking on water until he started to look at the wind. Only when he removed his eyes off Jesus and started looking at the circumstances did his faith falter. Don’t let circumstances, obstacles, or what anyone says that is contrary to the Word influence your faith. Don’t shrink back and don’t be double-minded. It won’t get you anywhere and it also displeases God. It tells Him you don’t trust Him.

How to avoid shrinking back and being double-minded:
  1. Put the Word into your heart, not just your head. If the Word is settled in your heart, nothing will move you.
  2. Put the Word into practice and you will be a wise man according to Jesus (Matthew 7:24). The more you are a doer of the Word, the more you’ll stand secure in its truth.
  3. Know your God and know that He does not lie (Titus 1:2). Spend time in prayer and conversation with Him and you’ll learn just how much He loves you and wants to bless you.
  4. Know who you are in Christ and what belongs to you as a child of Almighty God. It’s amazing how we can fight for what belongs to us when we know that it’s ours. Everything is possible for him who believes (Mark 9:23).
  5. Don’t entertain negative thoughts; take them captive.   2 Corinthians 10:5 says: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). Command doubt and unbelief to leave in the Name of Jesus. Take your thoughts captive and it will chase any double-mindedness away.

Call to action:
If you’ve put a prayer request before God, are you allowing your thoughts to cause you to shrink back or become double-minded? If so, choose to do something about it now. Let your thoughts honor and reflect God instead of the circumstances.
