Come Near to God

  • James 4:8  Come near to God and he will come near to you.
  • Psalm 91:14-15  “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
  • Jeremy 29:12-13  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
  • Hebrews 10:22 … let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings…

God is always waiting on us to come near to Him.  How close do you want to be to God?   The Word says that giving thanks to Him will get you into his gates and that praising Him will get you into His courts (Psalm 100:4).  You will find Him when you seek him with all your heart.  It’s a matter of the heart, your heart.

How to come near to God:
  1. Jesus told us that: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’, therefore, spend time in His Word to get to know Him, Him commands, and His promises.  When you read your bible actively (not passively), you are actually spending time with God.  Ask His Spirit that lives within you to teach you as you are reading.  He’ll give you revelation on scriptures.
  2. Praying is another way to come near to God.  Praying is having a conversation with God.  It’s not repetitive prayer but a two-way conversation.  So if you’ve been in the habit of doing all the talking, pray but then listen for His wisdom, for His direction, for His leading.  Come expecting so bring a pen and paper.  (I hesitate to mention electronic devices because they are often more a hindrance to hearing the voice of God as they distract people.)
  3. Thank Him and praise Him.  His heart will be blessed for it and so will yours.  Worship Him and lose yourself in His presence.  God loves a genuine heart.
  4. Engage Him throughout your day, not only in your times of need.  Fellowship with Him.
  5. Obey God’s Word and that will show Him that you love Him (John 14:21).

Call to action:
Thank Him, praise Him, and worship Him this week for the sole purpose of drawing nearer to Him.  Love on Him.  Sing songs of worship that will honor Him and bless His heart.
