Becoming a Child of God

  • John 3:5-7  Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
  • John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
  • John 14:6  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”
  • Romans 10:9  If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

There is only one way to become a child of God and that is by accepting His Son Jesus as Lord of your life.  When you do this, then you become what Jesus calls “born again”.  You become a temple of God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).  He deposits in you the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, etc. (Galatians 5:22-23).  You are in partnership, called covenant, with God and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

How to become a child of God:
  1. As Romans 10:9 says, confess with your mouth (verbally) that Jesus is your Lord.
  2. Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead.
  3. Once you’ve declared Jesus as your Lord and believe that He was raised from the dead, the Word of God says you are saved.  You are in covenant partnership with God and you can call on Him.  Take the time to read His Word, the Bible, daily.  Additionally, spend time communicating with God through prayer and conversation.  Praise and worship Him.

Call to action:
From your heart, speak out the following prayer:
“Father, I thank You for Your love for me.  I ask You to forgive my sins.  I believe in my heart that Jesus died on the cross and 3 days later was raised from the dead.  He is now seated at Your right in heaven.  I accept Jesus as Savior and Lord of my life.  I pray this in Jesus’ precious Name.”

Live a life that honors Him by getting to know Him through His Word, prayer, praise and worship.  Don’t just stay a believer who is satisfied with a ticket to heaven but become a true disciple of Jesus by obeying His commands found in the Bible (John 8:31).
