Be Strong in the Lord

  • Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
  • Zechariah 12:5 …The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God.
  • Zechariah 4:6 “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
  • Colossians 1:11 … being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.

We are to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. God doesn’t ask us to do it on our own. He is our Covenant Partner. His very Spirit is with us at all times and ready to assist whenever we call on Him. Additionally, we need to understand that we are fighting from a place of victory because of the finished work of the cross. Jesus has been exalted at the right hand of the Father, and He is interceding on our behalf whenever we pray in His Name. He has done His part but we must do ours and enforce the victory.

Be strong in the Lord is a command and it requires action. We need to use the weapons that have been provided to us, as we are not fighting a natural battle against a natural foe. God told us who our enemy is and has informed us how to obtain the victory over Satan. Every battle is ours to win, not to lose. Every battle we lose is a battle we have not prepared for or not used our weapons efficiently to win. Even some past battles that were lost can be reassessed in light of our arsenal to see if we can get back what the enemy has stolen. With God all things are possible.

Be prepared for the next flaming arrow the enemy sends your way. If you’ve built yourself up using the spiritual weapons available to you, nothing will harm you (Luke 10:19). (See topic Be Alert, Prepared and Self-Controlled.)

How to be strong in the Lord:
  1. Know your God and what He has said in His Word about you. Isaiah 54:17: “no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me.”
  2. Know who you are in Christ. You are more than a conqueror and you are an overcomer. Jesus has paid the price for your victory.
  3. Know the Word and accept it. Hosea 4:6 says: “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge…”
  4. The Word says to submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). Surrender and submit to God daily to remain in a position of power over the enemy.
  5. Know the weapons God has provided to you and learn how to use them. Put them to good use to win every time.
  6. Know your enemy and be ready when he sends flaming arrows your way. Regardless of the natural circumstances, you are fighting a spiritual fight against Satan.
  7. Spend time daily with God and develop your intimacy with Him. Praise Him and worship Him. This will develop your spiritual ear to hear your Covenant Partner as He speaks to you.

Call to action:
Identify 2 things that will enable you to be stronger in the Lord and then start doing them. If you can, identify someone whom you could challenge to do the same and grow spiritually stronger together.
