A Man After God’s Own Heart

  • Acts 13:22 I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.
  • James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.
  • Acts 20:22-24 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”
  • Luke 1:31-32, 38 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

A man after God’s own heart is a person that will do what God asks him to do. God described David that way. David missed it at times but his heart was set on God. Abraham obeyed God immediately and he was called a friend of God. God shared with him what He would do to Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham even negotiated with God for their freedom. Mary agreed to carry the Son of the Most High. Jesus was baptized by John even though He was the Messiah (Matthew 3:16). Jesus did it out of obedience. He also went to the cross to do His Father’s will (Luke 22:42). Paul knew that hardship was awaiting him in Jerusalem but he chose to do the will of the Father. God loves obedience and a surrendered heart and that’s how to be a man or woman after God’s own heart.

How do you become a man/woman after God’s own heart?
  1. Read the Word of God daily and do what it says to do. Jesus linked obedience to love for Him (John 14:15, 2 John 1:6).
  2. Listen for God’s direction and obey what He tells you to do through His still small voice inside you. Follow the Holy Spirit’s leading. God’s direction will always line up with His Word. If it doesn’t, it’s not Him.
  3. Repent if you haven’t done something God has told you to do. Ask Him if it still can be done or should be done and obey His instructions.

Call to action:
Purpose yourself to be a man/woman after God’s own heart this week by doing everything His Word and His still small voice tell you to do. Be led by the Spirit as you do. If God’s Word tells you to forgive, then do it. Don’t fight it. Just submit to God and He will help you. You will be blessed for it.
